The responsible management and protection of the natural environment by Australia’s 52,000 cattle producers have been recognised by some of the foremost organisations in the retail and the finance sectors.
Shareholders at Woolworths Annual General Meeting last week endorsed the company’s decision to rate beef a ‘low risk’ as it pursues a goal of ‘no deforestation’ in its supply chain.
And today, one of Australia’s big four banks, Westpac, has announced it will no longer require a formal ‘no deforestation’ commitment from customers as it supports an industry-led approach to managing deforestation risk.
Cattle Australia (CA) Chief Executive, Will Evans, praised both companies for sensible and responsible decisions which recognise caring for the land is at the heart of Australian beef production.
“Cattle producers protect and manage 50% of Australia’s land mass, and they are proud to play a part in ensuring the sustainability and prosperity of our environment for generations to come through responsible land management,” Mr Evans said.
“CA has worked closely with both Woolworths and Westpac to demonstrate the sustainability of cattle production systems, and the integrity of our Land Management Commitment.
“Australian producers abide by some of the strictest vegetation management laws in the world. There are more than 136 existing vegetation laws embedded in State, Territory and Federal legislation that protect the environment.
“Our commitment to land management, along with the underpinning legislative protections, has been recognised internationally with the European Union also assessing Australia as ‘low-risk’ for deforestation.”
Meeting market demands for sustainably sourced food and providing science-based evidence to support environmental credentials will be a major topic at next week’s Cattle Connect 2025 event in Dalby, Qld.
Cattle Connect is CA’s flagship industry event and is designed to foster the knowledge sharing, collaboration and new connections that will shape the future of the Australian beef sector.
Presenters will include JBS’s Global Chief Livestock Scientist, Dr Sarah Klopatek, and Assistant Minister for Agriculture Anthony Chisholm.
Ag education will be another key topic with an interactive panel session featuring Anthony Lee, CEO of Australian Country Choice, Luciano Mesiti, CEO of the Primary Industries Education Foundation Australia (PIEFA), and Grace Collins, 2025 National Rural Ambassador, while Land Watch Australia will lead a panel session on understanding the value of cattle station security.
Outside the conference hall there will be agtech demonstrations; working dogs, livestock handling and heifer conformation workshops; retail exhibitors and interactive displays and coffee at the RaboTruck.
Entertainment will include the inaugural CA Cup Campdraft, sponsored by Ceres Tag, music by Harrison John, and MLA chef Sam Burke’s ‘Showstopper Steaks’ Sundowner Show which will ensure all visitors enjoy the very best that beef has to offer.
- Cattle Connect will be held at the Dalby Showgrounds on November 11-12. To register visit www.cattleaustralia.com.au.
