The board of Cattle Australia wishes to pass on its condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the Hon. Simon Crean after he passed away Sunday.
Simon Crean was a statesman and advocate of the utmost integrity. He has left a lasting and positive mark on agriculture, trade and the Australian beef industry, helping shape our sector and setting it up for the success it enjoys today.
He served as Minister for Primary Industries and Energy under Prime Minister Bob Hawke and was involved in elevating the Landcare movement and ensuring permanent federal funding for the program.
He later served as Trade Minister under Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and oversaw the ratification of Australia’s free trade agreement with Chile and the multilateral ASEAN-Australia-New Zealand agreement that guarantees free trade with 10 countries in Asia and the South Pacific.
He was a great friend of the cattle industry and also served as a powerful advocate for live export while chair of the Australian Livestock Exporters Council from 2014-2019.
Simon Crean will be greatly missed and our thoughts are with his family during this difficult time.
