Nominations have today opened for the Cattle Australia (CA) elections, with three Board Director positions and seven Regional Consultative Committee (RCC) to be contested.
CA Chief Executive Officer, Will Evans, said the elections were the perfect pathway for people in the beef industry to contribute their ideas on policies affecting the supply chain, and to advocate on behalf of their industry and region.
“CA Board Directors and RCC representatives play a critical role in shaping the future of our industry, and ensure that the voices of Australian cattle producers are heard during critical decision-making processes,” Mr Evans said.
“Successful candidates will be responsible for guiding CA’s work on policy development and advocacy, by consulting with members at a grassroots level on issues including research, development, adoption and marketing investment, and by engaging with the broader community.”
As the peak industry body for the beef sector, CA has a legislated role to represent the more than 52,000 cattle transaction levy payers.
Mr Evans said strong producer leadership and connection to the grassroots of the industry was critical to undertaking that role and addressing the challenges and opportunities ahead.
“I encourage people to put forward nominations for people in their communities with the ideas and leadership skills to take the industry forward,” Mr Evans said.
“And as a democratic organisation, it will be the members who will vote and decide on who best to guide CA in its next phase of advocacy, so I urge all producers to consider becoming CA members so that they can vote in this year’s elections.”
The CA Board consists of seven democratically elected Directors and two skills-based Directors. The RCC is comprised of 22 members – 15 who are elected by CA members on a regional basis and seven who are appointed by the State Farming Organisations.
While the Board is responsible for organisational strategy and governance, the RCC is responsible for advising on issues affecting the cattle industry via engagement and consultation with producers at a grassroots level.
“Through the democratic model, CA has provided a direct line of sight for levy payers and direct input into policy formulation, enabling producers to influence government policy and drive change in their industry,” Mr Evans said.
Three Board Director positions are up for election, one each from the Northern, Southern and Western livestock research regions, currently held by Bryce Camm, Elke Cleverdon and James Bowie respectively.
There are seven RCC positions are up for election:
- Region 1 NSW – currently held by Angus Whyte
- Region 2 NSW – currently held by Cye Travers
- Region 3 NSW – currently held by Mac McArthur
- Region 4 Vic – currently held by Loretta Carroll
- Region 5 Vic – currently held by David Allen
- Region 6 Tas – currently held by Richard Sutton
