Cattle Australia (CA) has condemned Federal Minister for Agriculture Murray Watt’s deplorable announcement the live sheep trade will be closed from May 2028.
CA Chief Executive Officer, Dr Chris Parker, said the Australian cattle industry stood by its sheep producer colleagues against what is a clear demonstration of a government willing to overlook sound, evidence-based policy and instead legitimise extreme animal activism for base political reasons.
“Live sheep exporters have demonstrated time and time again they are world leaders in animal welfare,” Dr Parker said.
“This announcement is a kick in the guts for our rural and regional communities and has exposed just how out of touch this government is with the agriculture industry – one of the biggest contributors to the Australian economy and an integral part of our social fabric.
“The timing of this announcement also reveals a shocking disingenuity after both the Prime Minister and Minister Watt spent time at Beef2024 in Rockhampton shaking hands, slapping backs and spruiking their commitments to the agriculture industry while clearly plotting the destruction of one of its key parts.
“This decision will send shivers down the spine of the live cattle industry for fear they will be next.
“It will also not reduce the demand for live sheep. It will simply shift the market to other jurisdictions which may not have the same high standards as those of Australia.
“To see our leaders ignore scientific evidence to pander to ideologically-driven groups to capture the support of inner-city extremists is appalling. This decision is not about animal welfare, it’s about votes.
“Make no mistake, this policy will hurt animals, it will hurt people, and it will hurt our economy.”
