Cattle Australia (CA) has welcomed the joint announcement by the Federal and Queensland Governments of a $38 million disaster support package for flood-affected communities across North West Queensland and the Gulf.
Announced earlier today by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie, targeted investments will be made to assist in recovery, including $21.5 million for primary producer Disaster Recovery Grants up to $75,000, $11.5m for repairs and flood resilience at Cloncurry Airport and a $5 million increase to the previously announced emergency fodder package. The $38 million commitment is being made through the joint Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).
“The rainfall and flooding across the region are placing immense pressure on producers, families and rural communities. Reports from directly affected cattle producers show significant stock losses, damage to infrastructure and other hardships, and we welcome this joint support from the Albanese and Crisafulli Governments,” CA Vice Chair Adam Coffey said.
“This event will bring back difficult memories of the terrible flooding in 2019 for many and highlights the need for both immediate support and long-term recovery and resilience building. While the funding announced today is appropriate at this time, we do not yet have a full understanding of the flood’s impact and it will be important this is continually monitored and responded to if required.
“Cattle producers across the North West play a critical role in Australia’s world-leading beef value chain and in supporting local communities and employment. We stand ready to support them and to work closely alongside government, councils and industry bodies, such as AgForce, to navigate this recovery and rebuild phase.”
