This Thursday, at the MLA AGM, Cattle Australia is asking members to support a simple but important change to the MLA Constitution.
What’s the issue?
Right now, the MLA Constitution forces the Selection Committee to put forward only one candidate for each MLA Director vacancy.
That means levy payers – including you – never get the chance to vote between more than one candidate, even when there are several outstanding people for the role.
As the Cattle Australia representative on the Selection Committee, I can confirm that while the process is rigorous, there are times when the committee is split between two exceptional candidates. Under the current rules, levy payers are denied the opportunity to choose.
What is this a problem?
- The current MLA constitution unfortunately mandates that the selection committee ‘must’ only select one person for each Director vacancy
- This means that levy payers will never get the opportunity to vote on who is appointed to the critically important role of a MLA Director
At this year’s MLA AGM, which is being held on Thursday this week, Cattle Australia is moving an amendment to the MLA Constitution that proposes a small, but important change to the constitution.
What are we seeking to change?
- Replace the words “must not” to “may”
- This allows the selection committee the option of giving levy payers the opportunity to vote on candidates
- This will likely be used where the selection committee is split on its decision with more than one exceptional candidate for a vacant Director role
It may not always be the case that a vote is needed as the selection committee process is very robust in its nature but there are circumstances where the committee does not always agree.
In these circumstances Cattle Australia believes that one of the options that should be available to the selection committee is to put the selection of highly qualified candidates to the vote at the AGM.
Why does this matter?
- Because levy payers deserve a voice
- When more than one highly qualified candidate is available, levy payers should decide who represents them on the MLA Board
- This amendment will not change the selection process
- It simply ensures that in cases where the committee cannot reach agreement, the final decision sits where it should – with levy payers
Urgent support needed
- The MLA Board may use its proxies to vote against this amendment
- That would effectively block levy payers from having a future vote on MLA Directors
- If this happens, it will fall to individual producers attending or voting by proxy to carry the resolution
How to vote
- If you are attending the AGM – vote in favour of the constitutional amendment
- If you are not attending – you can assign your proxy:
- To Cattle Australia (email: ca@cattleaustralia.com.au)
- Or to the MLA Chair with a clear voting instruction supporting the amendment
- If you have already assigned your proxy but did not include a voting instruction, you can update it
Cattle Australia is committed to ensuring levy payers have a transparent, meaningful say in the governance of our industry. This small change will strengthen accountability and give producers the voice they deserve.
